The Conversation We Keep Avoiding

In New Zealand, men make up approximately 75% of suicides. Let that number sit for a second.

Three out of every four people who die by suicide in this country are men.

We need to talk about it. Loudly. Without shame.

Why Men Struggle

Boys are taught that emotions are weakness. By adulthood, many men have buried what they feel so deep that even close friends can't tell when something's wrong. This isn't strength. It's a learned behavior that kills.

What It Actually Looks Like

Increased anger or irritability. Short fuse. Picking fights.

Withdrawing. Canceling plans. Avoiding calls.

Overwork or overtraining. Using busyness to avoid feeling.

Substance use. Self-medicating to numb out.

Risk-taking. Reckless behavior.

Sleep issues. Insomnia or nightmares.

What Needs To Change

Men talking to men

Ask your mates how they're really doing. Create friendships where honesty is normal.

Try this: "How are you actually going?" Don't accept "yeah good." Push gently.
Remove therapy shame

Seeing a counsellor isn't weakness. Your mind deserves professional support.

First step: Talk to your GP. They can refer you to subsidized services.
Change the narrative

Strength is knowing when you need help and getting it.

You're Not Alone

None of us should have to stagger alone.

It can start with two words: "not great."
